This exhibition presents rarely-seen Old Master paintings drawn from the collection of Jacques Goudstikker, a preeminent art dealer in Amsterdam prior to World War II. In 1940, Goudstikker was forced to flee war-torn Europe with his family, yet died in a tragic accident while escaping the Nazi invasion. He left behind approximately 1,400 works of art in his gallery, which were looted by Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring. After years of unsuccessful attempts to recover these paintings, his family recently reclaimed 200 paintings from the Dutch government. Nearly fifty of the finest pieces—including Dutch Old Master works and Italian and Northern Renaissance paintings—have been selected for a touring exhibition that will showcase the eye of Jacques Goudstikker and emphasize the importance of both the artworks and their historic restitution. Photographs and documents, including Goudstikker’s gallery inventory notebook, will illuminate Goudstikker’s fascinating story.

The Tyler Museum of Art offers a panoramic view of the American experience west of the Mississippi—as seen through the eyes of the people who witnessed it take shape—in its next major exhibition, Scenes from the American West: The Phelan Collection.
The exhibition, organized by the TMA, opens to the public Sunday, Feb. 22 and continues through May 17, 2009 in the Museum’s North Gallery.
Scenes from the American West showcases more than 60 artworks from the collection of Arthur J. Phelan, a native of Chevy Chase, Maryland, who began to stoke a lifelong fascination with the American frontier upon his first travels to the Western states in the 1950s. Since acquiring his first piece of American Western art in 1967, Phelan’s collection has grown into one of the best-known of its kind in the United States.
Frederic Remington, Albert Bierstadt, John James Audubon and Alfred Jacob Miller are among the icons of the genre represented in the exhibition, yet a unique theme of Phelan’s collection is its inclusion of artists whose names are perhaps lesser-known but played no less indelible a role in capturing eyewitness accounts of the people who shaped the American frontier—and the events they experienced during the nation’s westward expansion.

LONDON.-Tate Britain has announced it will present Van Dyck and Britain, 18 February – 17 May. Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) was the greatest painter in seventeenth-century Britain. Van Dyck and Britain will reveal the Flemish artist’s unique impact on British cultural life, from the reign of Charles I onwards. This visually sumptuous exhibition will bring together some of the finest and most magnificent paintings that van Dyck produced during his years in Britain. It will also demonstrate his continuing visual legacy through portraits by artists from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, including Sir Joshua Reynolds and John Singer Sargent. Van Dyck was born and trained in the major art centre of Antwerp. He made a brief initial visit to London in 1620-21 before returning in 1632 to become the outstanding painter at the art-enthusiastic court of King Charles

Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) was the greatest painter in seventeenth-century Britain. Though trained in Flanders, he had a huge impact on British cultural life as the principal painter at King Charles I’s ostensibly elegant court, where his impact was similar to that of Hans Holbein at the court of Henry VIII.

Museo del Prado will be hosting next February the major retrospective exhibition on Francis Bacon organised by Tate Britain in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in collaboration with the Prado, to commemorate the centenary of the artit’s birth in October 1909. The exhibition comprises many of the Irish-born artist’s fundamental pieces, whose impressive style has turned him into one of the most singular and influential painters of the last century and will be shown in three cities which had a significant importance for him: London, where the show is currently on view, Madrid and New York. In Madrid, the exhibition has a special meaning since Bacon not only reflected in his works his knowledge concerning Spanish masters, such as Velázquez and Goya, but because he also died in Madrid on April 28 1992. Not to mention that he frequently visited the Prado during the last years of his life.
